In a two-party system, the opposition party serves as the alternative government. If the ruling party loses the confidence of the electorate or fails to perform effectively, the opposition party is ready to step in and take power. The opposition provides a counterbalance and offers policies and solutions that may appeal to voters who are dissatisfied with the current government.
