Nigerian troops were actively involved in peace-keeping missions in both Liberia and Somalia in 1993. In Liberia, they were part of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), which aimed to restore peace during the Liberian Civil War. In Somalia, Nigerian troops were part of the United Nations Operation in Somalia II (UNOSOM II), which sought to stabilise the country amidst civil unrest.
