Created in 1945 after World War II, the UN was established to succeed the League of Nations. It aimed to address the shortcomings of its predecessor by providing a more effective framework for international cooperation, peacekeeping and the protection of human rights. The UN has a broader membership and more robust mechanisms for enforcing its resolutions and promoting global stability.
