One of the significant defects of most pre-independence constitutions in British West Africa was the veto power held by the colonial governors. These governors, appointed by the British Crown, had the authority to override decisions made by the legislative councils, which limited the political influence and autonomy of African leaders and representatives. This power effectively kept real control in the hands of the colonial authorities.
