In pre-colonial Igboland, the Okpara, or the eldest male in a family or lineage presided over administration meetings. The Igbo society was structured around family lineages and clans and leadership was based on age and seniority. The Okpara held authority within his family and community, making decisions in consultation with elders and other members of the community.
