Marxism is rooted in historical materialism, which is a framework for understanding societal development based on material conditions and class relations. However, Marxism is directed against philosophical materialism in the sense of focusing solely on material wealth or possessions as the ultimate goal. Instead, Marxism critiques capitalism for its emphasis on material accumulation and advocates for a classless society where the means of production are collectively owned.
