설명

The African lungfish (Protopterus annectens) is a fish that aestivates. Aestivation is a state of torpor that some fish undergo during dry periods.

During aestivation, African lungfish burrow into the mud and enter a state of torpor, without food or water. They can remain in this state for up to five years. Other fish that aestivate include catfish, mudskippers, and South American lungfish. These fish use burrows as aestivation chambers to protect themselves from drying out.
