One basic feature of a monarchical form of government is that
succession is through heredity
the ruler has a fixed tenure
seperation of powers is absolute
members of the executive are elected

In most cases, monarchies are hereditary, but there are also elective and self-proclaimed monarchies. In an absolute monarchy, succession is always hereditary.
