Federalism was introduced in Nigeria under the Lyttleton Constitution of 1954. This constitution formally established Nigeria as a federal state by dividing the country into regions with distinct administrative powers. This marled a shift from a unitary system to a federal one. It also created a federal parliament with a central government and regional governments, each having its own legislature.
