Indirect Rule was a colonial policy implemented by the British in many parts of Africa, including Nigeria, where colonial powers governed through existing local leaders and traditional political structures. While this system appeared to preserve some local authority, it often undermined the sovereignty and true political power of the traditional institutions.

Colonial rulers maintained ultimate control and could override traditional systems when necessary, thus weakening the authority of indigenous governance.
