The 1979 Constitution of Nigeria recognised local government as the third tier of government. This was a significant development in Nigeria's constitutional history, as it formalised the structure and functions of local governments, granting them autonomy and recognition alongside the federal and state governments. The earlier constitutions, such as the 1960 and 1963 constitutions, did not provide for local governments as a distinct tier, and the 1946 Constitution primarily focused on colonial administration without recognizing local governments in this way.
