State government interference is one of the major problems affecting local governments in Nigeria today. Local governments are supposed to operate as autonomous entities under the Nigerian constitution, but state governments often exert undue control. This includes:
1. They have control over local government finances through the State Joint Local Government Account.
2. They interfere in the decision making of local government officials and impose administrative staff.
