JAMB - Chemistry (2007 - No. 12)

If chlorine is bubbled into water and the resulting yellowish-green solution is exposed to bright sunlight for a while, the solution will decompose giving out
oxygen and leaving behind aqueous hydrochloric acid
chlorine and oxygen
oxygen, hydrogen and chlorine
oxygen, thereby producing hypochlorous acid

Explicació

When chlorine reacts with water in the presence of sunlight, it produces oxygen gas and hydrochloric acid as the primary products; essentially, the sunlight breaks down the chlorine in water, liberating oxygen gas.

  2Cl\(_2\) + 2H\(_2\)O → 4HCl + O\(_2\)
