A number is added to both the numerator and the denominator of the fraction \(\frac{1}{8}\) if the result is \(\frac{1}{2}\), find the number.

So, \(\frac{1 + y }{8 + y}\) = \(\frac{1}{2}\)
cross multiply
8 + y = 2 + 2y
2y - y = 8 - 2
y = 6.
