An eclipse of the moon occurs when the
sun cats its shadow on the moon
the earth comes between the sun and the moon
when the moon comes between the sun and earth
earth casts its shadow on the moon

The moon has no light and so depends on the sun. The same goes for the earth, when the moon comes in between the sun and earth, it block the light coming from the sun directly to earth, hence lunar eclipse occur.
